Reflexology is an holistic therapy which works on the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands corresponding to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Stimulating these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a safe and natural way. The history of Reflexology begins back in ancient civilisations across the world. The earliest evidence comes from the tomb of an Egyptian physician, dated 2500BC. In the early 1900’s, influenced by Sir Charles Sherrington (Nobel prize-winner for medicine), Dr William Fitzgerald discovered that by applying pressure on certain parts of the body it would have a numbing effect on another part of the body. This work was continued and refined into what we now know today as Reflexology. Reflexology can help reduce stress and aid relaxation, improve circulation, cleanse the body of toxins and impurities and revitalise energy. It can also be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium, encouraging the natural healing process following illness or injury. Reflexology is preventative healthcare which is becoming more and more important, as we continue to realise the damage caused to health by our environment. Just by breathing and eating, we absorb impure air (eg, car exhaust, chemical and factory fumes) and eat unnatural additives in our food. These create toxins in our bodies that can build up on nerve endings, impeding our energy levels and resulting in starvation of the body’s natural powers of renewal. By pressure point massage over the reflex areas, toxins that have accumulated on the nerve endings can be broken down and a free flow of energy to the body can be restored. Reflexology also aids the circulation of blood and lymph, encouraging optimal absorption of nutrients and effective production of antibodies to fight infection, thereby improving the body’s overall immune system. Examples of conditions that respond particularly well to Reflexology are: asthma, cystitis, headache and migraine, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), angina, fatigue, high blood pressure, impotence, infertility, allergies, menopause, painful menstruation, sinusitis, stress and loss of vitality.
